About The Balcony Drip

Who writes The Balcony Drip, how we test products, and why this site exists.

Who we are

The Balcony Drip is written by Maya Chen and David Reyes from a fifth-floor walk-up in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.

We started this site in 2022 because every drip-irrigation guide we could find assumed you had a backyard, a hose bib, and permission to drill holes. We had a 6×4-foot concrete balcony, a landlord who said no to modifications, and a kitchen sink that had to stretch for everything.

Four summers of dead plants, flooded balconies, and one memorable incident with a gravity-fed system that turned into a gravity-failed system later, we know more about water pressure regulators, inline filters, and emitter placement than any two people in a 650-square-foot apartment should.

What we actually test

We do not review products from press releases or manufacturer spec sheets.

Every product we recommend has been:

  • Purchased with our own money or obtained through standard affiliate programs (never sponsored)
  • Installed on our actual balcony or a friend’s balcony with similar constraints
  • Run for at least two weeks under normal summer conditions
  • Evaluated for the specific problems balcony gardeners face: leaks onto neighbors, wind knocking emitters loose, timers that reset when the power flickers, tubing that turns brittle in UV exposure

We replace or discard products that fail. If a timer dies after three weeks, we say so. If a kit claims to cover 20 containers but barely manages 8 with adequate pressure, we say so. If a “universal” fitting leaks on standard US hose threading, we say so.

What we write

Our articles fall into four categories:

  1. Setup guides — Step-by-step instructions for building working systems in real balcony constraints
  2. Buying guides — Honest comparisons with price ranges, not just “best” picks that happen to carry the highest commission
  3. Troubleshooting — Diagnosing actual problems we have experienced: clogs, pressure loss, overwatering, algae, uneven flow
  4. Plant-specific guides — Watering schedules and emitter setups for the vegetables and herbs we actually grow

How we make money

This site uses affiliate links. When you click a link and buy something, we earn a commission — usually 5-10% of the sale price. It costs you nothing extra.

Our editorial independence is non-negotiable. We have turned down partnerships with manufacturers who wanted favorable coverage. We recommend cheaper products when they work better for balcony constraints. Our first loyalty is to readers who need reliable information, not to affiliate programs.

Who this site is for

  • Apartment and condo renters who cannot modify their building’s plumbing
  • First-time drip irrigation users overwhelmed by agricultural-grade systems
  • Urban growers with 4-10 containers who want automation without landlord conflicts
  • Anyone who has killed a tomato plant by forgetting to water it for two days
